A YOUNG man who carried out a drive-by airgun shooting after an argument in a city pub has been sentenced to community service. Edinburgh Sheriff Court heard today how four people were forced to dive into bushes for cover when they were fired on by 20-year old Scott Martin.

Airgun sniper shoots two teenage girls

POLICE were last night hunting an airgun sniper who shot and injured two teenage girls. Officers were initially called to investigate after reports that fireworks were being let off near historic Rhuddlan Castle. But when they arrived, the teenagers approached them to say someone had fired an airgun at them.

Air rifle is fired into playground

THREE people were last night in police custody after a shot was discharged from what police described as an air rifle into the playground of a Ballymena school. A 13-year-old boy was later arrested on suspicion of firearms offences and just hours later two other males, aged 17 and 40, were also arrested in connection with the incident.

At least 19 pet doves have been shot and killed by a sniper in the village of Wedmore in Somerset. Their airgun pellet-peppered bodies have been found scattered across the village in the last few weeks.

A man has been accused of firing an air rifle at another man, hitting him on the head with a pellet. Owen Carmichael, 27, of Whitehills Avenue, Lochmaben, appeared in private at Dumfries Sheriff Court before Sheriff Kenneth Barr.

Mother of blinded girl devastated by sentence

THE mother of a teenage girl blinded in one eye after she was shot with an airgun has been left devastated by the court sentence her attacker received. Doctors performed surgery to remove the pellet, but were unable to save the sight in the girl's left eye. She is still struggling to come to terms with her injury six months after the attack. Last night, the girl and her mother were in shock and were too upset to speak about the sentence. The youth who shot her in the face was given a six-month detention and training order for the incident.

Police issue warning after ambulances are fired at

VANDALS who fired at ambulances and a schoolgirl with air weapons have been warned that they risk being shot by armed police officers. The warning came after the attacks on two ambulances answering 999 calls, one with a patient on board, and an incident in which a schoolgirl was shot in the leg, all in Middlesbrough.

A Police investigation was underway last night after a teenager was shot in the face by an air gun in South Armagh. The 13 year-old boy was struck by a pellet just below his left eye and he was treated in hospital for swelling to the area.

Staffordshire Police have issued a fresh warning to parents about the dangers of air guns after a string of serious incidents across the county. It follows the summer holidays during which police dealt with a total of 63 incidents over a six week period where air weapons were positively identified. As a result, officers have reminded parents and other adults that air weapons, including BB guns, can cause serious injury or death.

A CONVICTED armed robber is looking down the barrel of another jail term after being caught in possession of an air rifle. Kevin Clarke, of Erdale Close, Eastleaze, served four-and-a-half years behind bars in November 2000 for his part in an armed robbery. But after being informed he faced a life ban from owning any firearms upon his release from prison, the 25-year-old was caught red handed with an air rifle on August 8 this year.

A teenager who put lives at risk by firing air rifles at cars has been spared prison after magistrates commended the way he had carried out his unpaid work in the community. Jamie Browne, 19, was one of a group of youths who hit cars travelling along the A47, near Costessey, with rifle pellets.
