Police have arrested two local youths, aged 18 and 16, and recovered an air weapon from the scene. "He staggered 70 yards and collapsed in the street. Paramedics tried to revive Daniel as they took him the short distance to the hospital. A YOUNG mum lost an eye after a teenager's "joke" with an air rifle went tragically wrong. Scott Pratt, 17, claimed he didn't know the weapon was loaded when he fired it at 20-year-old Amanda Condie from close range. Amanda collapsed clutching her left eye and Pratt immediately got a towel to stem the flow of blood. At the High Court in Edinburgh yesterday, Pratt, of Baldridgeburn, Dunfermline, admitted culpably and recklessly firing the gun at Amanda on August 27 last year. The case was heard as a campaign to ban airguns in Scotland gathered pace.

The man, who has not been identified, is said to be a 37-year-old from Hull, East Yorks. His body was found in nearby Cottingham. Several people are known to fire air rifles in the area, according to the detective leading the inquiry. More than 1000 people supported a petition by Edinburgh North and Leith MP Mark Lazarowicz calling for tougher laws following a spate of incidents in the city. Now new UK-wide legislation is set to come into force by Christmas which will mean people carrying the guns in public could be jailed for up to a year. The Violent Crime Reduction Bill will also make it an offence to fire an airgun in public and ban under-18s from buying or owning one. All airguns will also now have to be sold over the counter by registered dealers. Police are currently called to almost five airgun attacks every week in Lothian and Borders. The most recently published figures showed incidents involving air weapons nearly doubled from 125 in 2000, to 240 in 2003. Last year, police launched the first dedicated 24-hour armed response unit in Edinburgh to deal with gun- related incidents. Mr Lazarowicz said today: "I have been leading a local campaign for the past year calling for tighter controls on airguns and replica weapons. I am delighted to report that this campaign has achieved success with the House of Commons and House of Lords passing the Violent Crime Reduction Bill, toughening the law on the sale of air weapons and replica guns.

Staffordshire Police have issued a fresh warning to parents about the dangers of air guns after a string of serious incidents across the county. It follows the summer holidays during which police dealt with a total of 63 incidents over a six week period where air weapons were positively identified. As a result, officers have reminded parents and other adults that air weapons, including BB guns, can cause serious injury or death.

A CONVICTED armed robber is looking down the barrel of another jail term after being caught in possession of an air rifle. Kevin Clarke, of Erdale Close, Eastleaze, served four-and-a-half years behind bars in November 2000 for his part in an armed robbery. But after being informed he faced a life ban from owning any firearms upon his release from prison, the 25-year-old was caught red handed with an air rifle on August 8 this year.

A 16-year-old boy has lost the sight in one eye and has a pellet permanently embedded in his brain following an accident with an air rifle. Staffordshire Police said the youth, from Featherstone, was playing with the weapon in a wooded area on 20 August when it went off. The boy is now out of hospital but needs further treatment. Police are concerned the boy bought the gun at a car boot sale. Tests show they can fire if accidentally dropped.

WHITBY harbour has been described as "Death Alley" for swans after another bird was found shot. The situation is now so bad that Yorkshire Swan Rescue, which says it has had to help eight or nine swans from Whitby in the past few weeks, is refusing to return any of the birds to Whitby. The charity, based in York, has branded Whitby the most dangerous place in Yorkshire for the birds with a swan being found with four airgun pellets lodged in its head last month.
